Many pupils from rural areas still experience distinct challenges in accessing higher education. Lack of information, socio-economic barriers, geographic location and poverty are all contributing factors, which make it difficult or rather impossible for disadvantaged learners to further their studies. We, as Gateway City college, saw a need to contribute and assist the community of KwaMaphumulo where Andiswa Cele – a student started an initiative of assisting learners and the youth from her community with tertiary applications and bursaries. This was recently held at Maphumulo Spar Hall. It was a successful programme as most matriculants showed up and participated.
